Sailing In Sabine LakeLake Sabine offers some of the best sailing on the Gulf Coast. Predominantly southeast winds build to 12-14 knots in the afternoons. Water temperatures range from the 60s in the winter to the 80s in the summer. The majority of Lake Sabine has a depth of 5-8 feet. The Pleasure Island Marina is home to almost 400 boats ranging from small board boats to sailboats to large fishing boats. Approximately 200 slips are within the confines of the Port Arthur Yacht Club and require club membership; the remainder of the slips are leased by the Pleasure Island Commission. NOTE: Construction began in April 2010 for a new marina on Pleasure Island to replace the marina that was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Phase 1 includes the bulkheading and utilities infrastructure; Phase 2 includes the addition of floating docks and utility connections. The marina is scheduled to reopen in early 2011. Port Arthur Yacht Club facilities include an air-conditioned clubhouse with kitchen facilities and restrooms, a gated-entry marina with 200+ boat slips, boat hoist, screen house, ice machine, easy access to fuel and pump-out stations, and limited dry-storage facilities. Pleasure Island Marina facilities will include upon completion in early 2011 restrooms with showers, covered and uncovered boat slips, a fuel station, a pumpout station, and gated entries.
