Port Arthur's Pleasure Island, an 18.5 mile long man-made body of land, extends from the mouth of the Neches River on the northwest to the Sabine Causeway on the southeast and is surrounded by Sabine Lake and the Sabine Neches Intracoastal Waterway.

Pleasure Island is a place of beauty.  Its hills, bluffs, and vistas of Sabine Lake are a delight and pleasure to those who visit.  Pleasure Island is where the fun begins!

United States Army Corps of Engineers

The Port Arthur field office of the U. S. Corps of Engineers operates within the Galveston District.  It is the Galveston District's mission to

  • Plan, design, and construct river and harbor, multiple purpose, and flood control works
  • Operate and maintain flood control and navigation facilities and installations
  • Administer laws for the protection and preservation of navigable waters and wetlands
  • Acquire, manage, and dispose of real property for civil works and military activities
  • Provide real estate services for the Department of Energy, other federal agencies, and for local cost sharing partners
  • Perform any other functions assigned by law

The Port Arthur office is charged with maintaining the waterways south to north  from 19 miles offshore to Beaumont and east to west along the Intracoastal Waterway from the Louisiana border to High Island.  Other duties include drawing up plans and specifications for waterway projects, administering the awarded contracts, and cleaning up hazardous waste on Federal properties.
